I am thrilled to announce that my newest body of work, Genus/species, will be available for viewing and purchase from October 22-28, on Artwrk.ca.

View Genus/species on Artwrk.ca here.

I started this series in 2019, and it quickly took on a life of its own, with lighter tones and the beauty of the flowers encouraging and sustaining me through the pandemic. The figures seek connection with nature and beauty, which is something that many of us have felt and sought out during the last 19 months.

Thank you to curator Alissa Sexton and the hardworking team at Artwrk.ca for their help in mounting this show, and for providing a platform for Canadian artists to show and sell their work.

Melancholia - A FotoNotsrum exhibition - Carrer de la Diputacio 48 08015 Barcelona, Spain

Melancholia, a FotoNostrum exhibition, will open on 18 June 2021 until 18 September 2021..

It intends to explore the dichotomy of melancholia and utopia, shedding light on the grey zone that lies between optimism and disenchantment.

Bringing together artists from all horizons, the aim is to question the individual’s position in society, connecting the harsh world of reality to a romantic vision of hope and beauty.

With the romantics’ idea of finding beauty in the disregarded and the unconventional, the exhibition takes us on a journey through the unconscious, grief, and the search of one’s inner self in all its nuances.

Artist Spotlight 🔍: Shelagh Howard's "In Camera" series is inspired by the use of the phrase as a legal term, meaning "in private." By working with long and the nude figure, Howard explores the construction of the self, involving gendered beauty, body image issues, vulnerability, isolation and acceptance.⠀
.⠀
Howard’s use of long exposures create a painterly effect and explore similarities and differences, human inter-connection, experiences and moments, while maintaining cognizant perspective of past memories and experiences. ⠀
.⠀
"My recent work with the male figure aims to explore a rarely seen perspective, moving away from traditional masculinization, eroticism or toxicity, and towards a deeper position of empathy, vulnerability and understanding. ⠀

I hope that my images lead the viewer to look beyond what is culturally prescribed, and to instead see the universal truths that we all carry within us, wrapped in our flesh but never truly concealed by it."⠀
